Growing with the Region’s Healthcare Needs

Sunway Medical Centre Penang (SMCP) isn’t just expanding â€ it’s keeping pace with the changing needs of the northern community. As more people seek specialised, high-quality care, SMCP is building new facilities, bringing in top medical experts, and embracing the latest technology to make sure patients, both local and international, get the best possible care close to Ì첩ÈüʹÙÍø.
Using cutting-edge technology, multidisciplinary expertise and a commitment to medical excellence, SMCP is continuously evolving to meet the rising healthcare demands of both local and international patients.
It has now grown to a 312-bed capacity, with 24 critical care beds and 10 operating theatres, enabling more advanced and specialised surgical procedures across multiple disciplines.
Along with adding more space, SMCP has also expanded its specialised services. From paediatrics and paediatric cardiology to orthopaedics and cardiology, patients now have access to a broader range of care, personalised to fit their specific health needs.
SMCP provides a holistic, patient-centred cancer care journey, supporting individuals from screening and diagnosis to treatment and post-recovery care.
Cancer services include positron emission tomography and computed tomography (PET/CT) scans and a full range of treatment options, such as chemotherapy, radiosurgery, stereotactic radiotherapy, tomography, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, hormone therapy, precision medicine and surgical treatments.
With a tumour board and emphasis on multidisciplinary approach in patient care, the doctors and team members from various backgrounds come together to create and provide personalised patient care to the patients.
Expanding into clinical trials and medical research, SMCP is driving innovation in healthcare by contributing to the development of new treatments, breakthrough therapies, and advanced medical solutions, ensuring patients have access to the latest advancements in care.
SMCP understands that cancer treatment is hard â€ it’s not just the physical side of things, but the emotional toll too. That’s why they’ve set up a support group where patients and families can talk openly, share their worries, and find the help they need when things get tough.
At SMCP, they’re making patient care even better by embracing the use of AI technology.
The AI-powered radiology system helps doctors spot issues faster, making diagnosis quicker and more accurate. With AI-assisted MRI scans, patients can get results faster with higher-quality images, meaning they’re in and out quicker, with a lot less hassle. And in radiation therapy, AI makes treatment planning more precise, helping doctors target tumours better while keeping healthy tissue safe.
On top of that, SMCP has brought in the Hybrid Angio-CT system, which combines two imaging techniques to give doctors a clearer, more detailed look at the heart and brain. This helps them treat complex conditions with greater accuracy, leading to better outcomes for patients.
This technology allows specialists to visualise blood vessels in high detail, while improving stroke intervention, cardiac procedures and minimally invasive treatments, ultimately leading to better patient outcomes.
SMCP operates a structured stroke protocol, ensuring rapid intervention for stroke patients within the critical golden hour. A dedicated team including neurologists, neurosurgeons, interventional radiologists, emergency physicians and paramedics provides 24/7 care, supported by advanced imaging and minimally invasive procedures that optimise survival and recovery outcomes.
Robotic-assisted surgery is a key part of SMCP’s expansion, enhancing surgical precision and minimally invasive procedures across multiple specialities, including orthopaedics, upper gastrointestinal and bariatric surgery, urology, colorectal surgery and hepatobiliary procedures.
“Expanding our hospital is about more than just increasing capacity, said Chief Executive Officer Christine Lee.
“It’s about ensuring patients in the region have access to high-quality care and the latest advancements in AI-driven diagnostics, robotics, and specialised care.
“By continuously growing our facilities, integrating advanced medical technologies, and enhancing specialised services and subspecialties, our focus is on providing exceptional care that is both cutting-edge and patient-centred, ensuring every individual receives the best possible treatment, she said.
With ample space for future growth, the hospital remains committed to long-term expansion plans, ensuring that as healthcare needs evolve, it continues to deliver world-class medical services to all.
